Niki Campbell

Artist’s statement

As a multimedia artist my work ranges from experimental drawings to walk- in installations. Time, natural space & materials are all key ingredients to the way I work.

I am interested in discovering what a drawing can be and a key aspect to my practice is to explore this. The physical process of drawing forms an important component to the final outcome. The act of mark making is unplanned and open ended, the results unique to each particular drawing.

Questioning  traditions and accepted norms extends to my sculptural work where I use commonplace, throwaway objects and objects infused with cultural meaning. I seek to change our perception of what is familiar and challenge our acceptance of it. By undoing the story I attempt to create a new narrative referring to my multicultural hybridity.
